Mount Etna & Alcantara Gorges Tour from Taormina: Easy Trekking, Craters & Lava Canyons

Join one of the top-rated Mount Etna tours from Taormina, with convenient departure from Taormina, Giardini Naxos, and nearby towns. You’ll experience the volcano on its most authentic and less crowded side: Etna North.

This guided Mount Etna trekking tour includes an easy hike among extinct craters, ancient lava flows, and dramatic “moon-like” landscapes. In the afternoon, you’ll visit Sicily’s most famous lava canyon: the Alcantara Gorges.

How the Mount Etna Tour Works

Up to about 1,000 meters, the landscape is a mix of forests and traditional farmland: birch trees, pines, cherry trees, olive groves, and vineyards offer stunning views over Etna’s northern slope.

By 4×4 vehicle we follow the scenic Mare–Neve Road to reach around 2,000 meters in the Piano Provenzana area, the main gateway to Mount Etna North.

From here, you’ll hike along quiet natural trails to the Sartorius Craters, up to about 2,200 meters. Your expert guide will explain Etna’s volcanic formations, lava flows, and unique vegetation in a clear and engaging way.

After the craters, you’ll explore an lava tube cave beneath the surface. Helmets and technical equipment are included for an easy and safe cave experience.

A lunch stop is planned at a chalet under the pine forest (basic menu available on-site for an extra fee).

Afternoon Visit to the Alcantara Gorges

In the afternoon we head to the Alcantara Valley. The return route includes a scenic drive through Castiglione di Sicilia, a charming medieval village, before reaching Sicily’s most spectacular basalt canyon: the Alcantara Gorges.

Formed over more than 8,000 years by river erosion on basalt rock, the gorges are still evolving today: in some areas the water sculpts the lava walls, while in others it creates small sandy riverbanks.

An exclusive full-day experience for travelers who want to combine volcano, nature, and canyon landscapes in one well-balanced day, with an expert guide and comfortable pacing.

Da provare.
L’Etna è una scoperta. Non ti aspetteresti di camminare sulla lava de vulcano.
Anche la visita alle gole di Alcantara non si possono perdere.
Poi Danny è uno spettacolo, guida, autista e cabarettista. Chiedete di lui!
Grazie di tutto

We had a fantastic day with Massimo our guide. He picked us up from our hotel. He was full of knowledge and very easy to chat to. If you are planning on doing this tour please bring longer socks- the tour lends the walking boots but we had ankle socks which were annoying!! We spent lots of time walking and learning about the volcano’s- very interesting! We then left for lunch which was either a bread roll sandwich or pasta-we choose the bread! Lots of choices for fillings, also got a drink and cake for 10 euros, good food at a good cost. What was nice, we had our lunch with the other people on the tour, a family from France and a family from Italy. It was nice to have the time to chat about the day. We then left for the Alcantara gorge, a 45 minute drive and we arrived. We walked down the steps to a fantastic sight, it’s definitely worth a visit! Take wet shoes as lots of stones. The water itself is very cold but once over that it’s amazing to walk up the gorge, absolutely fascinating!! We spent 30 minutes there which was a good amount of time. Then driven home! A very good tour and good value for money, the views were absolutely stunning!

Consigliatissima.
